AKA is able to offer specialist planning advice to the healthcare industry. Working for both public and private sector clients we advise on a wide range of care and specialist housing projects, including care and nursing homes, extra care housing, sheltered housing, hostels, secure residential institutions and care villages. This newsletter showcases recent examples of our successful healthcare schemes.

Amongst the issues on which we advise are:

AKA is currently working on a number of exciting projects for retirement communities. These schemes provide for a range of care needs on a single site, with a key objective being to take care to people in their own apartments rather than taking people into care.

Working for Avante Partnership, AKA secured planning permission in August 2010 for the development of a 100 bedroom care home, 47 independent living apartments and a range of communal facilities.

Our on-going work for Sanctuary Care illustrates our understanding of the many issues associated with the development of care and nursing homes. AKA advises the client from site appraisal and scheme inception through to consultation with local authority officers, Members, and local interest groups.

In July 2010 AKA secured planning permission for the redevelopment of an existing residential care home to provide a 29 bedroom facility offering nursing and dementia care.

Following planning and conversation area approval in 2009 for a new 75 bedroom nursing home, AKA continues to support the client in ensuring compliance with the associated planning conditions.

With a focus on promoting inclusion and independence, we have been involved in a number of housing projects for specialist care operators and user groups.

Working on behalf of the Tamarisk Trust, AKA assisted in obtaining permission for 18 self-contained flats for people with Down Syndrome, dementia and learning disabilities.
AKA obtained approval in December 2009 for the change of use and extension of a rural education centre (located in an AONB) to provide 20 bedrooms for adults with specialist physical, learning or mental health needs.
